Different Types of Hair and Their Needs

Everyone wants to have great hair and with the proper TLC – tender loving care; it is possible to sport a mane that makes anyone envy you. On the other hand, there are a few things that you need to pay attention to, the most major factor being the type of hair you have. While everyone has different hair, stylists have been able to allot hair into the following four major hair types.

Type 1 – Straight Hair

Straight hair is considered to be the most resilient hair type. It has a natural sheen to it and it can be challenging to curl and style it as well. It also happens to be the one hair type that is prone to oiliness. To keep it healthy, sebum levels have to be maintained properly.

Type 2 – Wavy Hair

Wavy hair is another common hair type. The hair strand has an S shape in their strand. It has a natural sheen that is greater than the sheen of curly hair but not for straight hair. Unfortunately it can be challenging to style this hair. Moreover, wavy hair is particularly prone to frizz and humidity levels in the atmosphere can also make an impact. The more wavy hair is handled, the more it tends to frizz so it’s best to keep handling hair at a minimum.

Type 3 – Curly Hair

Curly hair has a prominent S shape in the strand that is evident to see. Most curly hair has a definite curl pattern that influences the way the hair curls. This type of hair has more body and volume than wavy or straight hair. However, it is more prone to humidity, frizz and dullness as well. Among the hair types, it has the lowest natural sheen but keeping curls clean and healthy can make a difference in it. Curly hair tends to be dry and straightening it usually requires the application of a lot of heat. This can be damaging to the hair.

Type 4 – Kinky Hair

Kinky hair or tightly coiled hair is one of the most delicate hair types and the hair strand has a defined zigzag pattern to it. Allowed to grow, it forms the quintessential afro but despite its wiry appearance, this hair type is the fragile and very fine in texture. If not looked after properly, it is prone to breakage especially if handled roughly. It is the driest hair type and exposure to harsh chemicals can damage the hair.

How to keep it Healthy
